When a device, connection or application fails, it can take down mission critical operations. Sometimes, one systems failure will cascade to applications on other systems that rely on the data or services from the failed unit.

Data center per-cabinet power consumption has steadily increased over the past several years as pedestal servers drawing 1KW/rack have given way to 1U/2U pizza box servers at 3.5KW/cabinet and blade implementations at 10KW/cabinet. Faster CPUs, larger memory chips, and smaller disk drives also continue to increase power demands.

Beyond backup and recovery protection, ensuring maximum data center availability and uptime is clearly crucial to a business’s success. Business Continuity seldom goes beyond the planning stage at most companies, however, until downtime or data loss hit.

Virtual machines offer many benefits: server consolidation, increased utilization and faster recovery times after failure.

Companies often run just one application per server because they don’t want to risk the possibility that one application will crash and bring down another on the same machine. Estimates indicate that most x86 servers are running at an average of only 10 to 15 percent of total capacity. With virtualization, you can turn a single purpose server into a multi-tasking one, and turn multiple servers into a computing pool that can adapt more flexibly to changing workloads.

With the Cisco UCS 82598KR-CI adapters, a maximum of two adapters are presented to the VMware ESX hypervisor running on the blade. This interface count does not support a fabric failover, and the service console must be migrated to the Cisco Nexus 1000V Series Switch along with all these other adapter types if any high-availability requirement exists. The Green IT approach can include several different phases in the lifecycle of a product – the development, production, usage and disposal of IT. Development must grant consideration to the environment; the production must take place using environmentally friendly production methods; the IT solutions must be used in an environmentally friendly manner; and finally, IT waste must be disposed of in an environmentally correct manner. Data storage systems are used in a variety of businesses for the purpose of storing and maintaining data which is critical to the operation of the businesses and their customers. It is very important that such data storage systems be highlyreliable to minimize or eliminate the chance of losing data if the system fails. The most secure and reliable systems employ total redundancy, in which every component of the system is replicated, such that, upon a failure of a component, anothercomponent takes over operation, so that the data storage system can remain fully functional. For example, two storage processors may be provided in a system such that if one fails, the other assumes the operation of the failed processor as well asmaintaining its own. However, total redundancy is expensive and can be an inefficient use of system resources.
